By Cristian Aránguiz. In an interview with AméricaEconomía,Avesta Hojjati, Head of R&D at DigiCert , demystifies the idea that blockchain is the one great and only solution for cybersecurity, and affirms that the key lies in its proper use, but in understanding it alongside other applications. Furthermore, Hojjati reaffirms the productive power that blockchain delivers in companies' production processes.
-Should blockchain be accepted as the next major productivity technology or is it still in development?
-The first thing is to make clear that blockchain represents its applications. Something very important happened between 2009 and 2010, when bitcoin appeared. Everyone started to think that blockchain was only bitcoin. While its transparency, adaptability, and blockchain capabilities are what's central to understanding. Today there is still much misinformation about it. Don't fear blockchain, embrace it.
-Is blockchain the best technology today for solving cybersecurity problems?
-What I could tell you is that blockchain doesn't come to solve all the security problems that exist, and that's what DigiCert is focused on today. We are seeing blockchain as a security tool, within a toolbox, but we don't see blockchain as a solution to all our digital security problems.
-If blockchain is not a panacea for all cybersecurity problems, what is its contribution to cybersecurity?
-When you think about cybersecurity and blockchain, the first question people should ask themselves is: what problem does blockchain solve in my cybersecurity infrastructure? For example, having the ability to audit access to servers is something very important for a company's cybersecurity managers; because if you have a server that gathers all the server accesses and you want to ensure that no one has changed access to that server, including someone who could be attacking these servers, blockchain is something that helps you. Because if you're able to put your general operating status on blockchain, you can receive consensus from other parties; you can be sure that they cannot change information in the past or change history. It wouldn't just be very difficult to deceive you or modify data, but you could also verify, based on its history, the people who interacted with you.
